Ultimate Guide To Grotto Falls, Payson, Utah

Grotto Falls is on the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway about 10 miles east of Santaquin, in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest at the base of Mount Nebo. The hike is 0.6 miles roundtrip to a waterfall that spills over a rocky ledge into a natural grotto, which is the forested, shaded bowl that gives the falls their name. Easy terrain, footbridges over the creek, a cool microclimate under the canyon canopy. It’s the kind of quick stop that earns its place on the Nebo Loop without asking much of you.

Mount Nebo shares this corridor, a natural companion: the short accessible falls stop and the serious summit hike from the same road. The falls are about 4 miles up Nebo Loop Road from US-6, which is the scenic byway approach that makes the drive to the trailhead as worthwhile as the hike itself.

How to Get There

From I-15, take Exit 244 (Santaquin Main Street). Head east on Main Street, which becomes US-6 as you leave town. After approximately 6 miles on US-6, turn left onto Nebo Loop Road (Forest Road 015). Follow Nebo Loop Road about 4 miles to the signed Grotto Falls Trailhead on the left.

From Salt Lake City, plan about 1 hour: I-15 south to Exit 244. From Provo, about 35-40 minutes south on I-15. The Nebo Loop Scenic Byway drive itself is worth the unhurried version: views of Mount Nebo’s west face, Juab Valley, and the rolling terrain between Payson and Nephi.

Nebo Loop Road closes approximately November 1st and reopens around Memorial Day weekend depending on snowpack. When the road is closed, the hike in from US-6 adds approximately 6 miles roundtrip to the total distance, significantly changing the commitment level. Check USFS road status before planning a late-fall or early-spring visit.

Cell Service and Navigation

Cell coverage drops on Nebo Loop Road. Download AllTrails offline before leaving the I-15 corridor. The Grotto Falls Trail is short and well-maintained, with straightforward navigation from the trailhead to the falls. Having the GPS map active is useful for the return trip to confirm you’re heading back in the right direction if you’ve spent time exploring the grotto.

What to Expect on the Grotto Falls Trail

The Trail

The trail from the parking area climbs a forested canyon alongside a small creek, crossing it on footbridges at several points. The canyon provides dense tree cover that shades the trail through most of its length, which combined with the creek makes this one of the cooler micro-environments accessible from the Nebo Loop in summer. The sound of the water builds as you approach the falls.

A few short steep sections require attention on the final approach to the falls. The rock and ground near the falls base are wet from spray and can be slippery regardless of weather. Appropriate footwear for the last section is worth having.

Grotto Falls

Grotto Falls spills over a rocky ledge into a natural grotto, a cool, shaded bowl at the base of the falls surrounded by the canyon walls. The enclosed character of the grotto creates a temperature drop relative to the open trail, making it a genuine refuge on warm days. The falls volume is highest in spring and early summer from snowmelt off Mount Nebo above.

For photography: overcast days produce even, soft light in the shaded grotto without the contrast problems of direct sun. Mornings before the sun clears the canyon rim are the cleanest window on sunny days. A wide-angle lens for the grotto geometry and the full falls, a tripod or gorilla pod for the slower shutter work to blur the water. The intimate scale of the grotto rewards close compositions as much as wide-angle shots.

Trail Difficulty and Length

Easy is accurate when the road is open. The difficulty changes substantially when Nebo Loop Road is closed and the approach from US-6 adds roughly 6 miles to the total distance, shifting the effective difficulty to moderate. The Quick Facts and difficulty note reflect this distinction clearly.

Dog Friendly?

Yes. Dogs are welcome on leash. The creek crossings on footbridges give dogs water access at multiple points on the approach. The short trail and easy terrain make this one of the more comfortable dog options on the Nebo Loop. Keep dogs leashed and away from the slippery rock surfaces near the falls base.

What to Bring

Water even for a short hike. Sun protection for the parking area and the open sections on Nebo Loop Road. Layers for the shaded grotto which is noticeably cooler than the road. Footwear with grip for the wet rock near the falls. If you’re planning to hike in from US-6 when the road is closed, treat it like a moderate half-day hike with appropriate water and food for the added mileage.

For photography: tripod for the falls, polarizing filter for the creek sections and any open water glare, wide-angle and mid-range for the grotto.

Best Time to Visit

Late May through October when Nebo Loop Road is open. Peak flow is in spring and early summer when Mount Nebo snowmelt is active. The falls are most dramatic from late May through June. July through September are warm but the shaded grotto remains cool relative to other Wasatch Front hikes.

Fall brings aspen color to the Nebo Loop corridor in late September and October. The combination of the grotto waterfall and fall color in the surrounding canyon is a strong photography window.

Check Nebo Loop Road status before any visit outside the June through September reliable window. The road sometimes opens later than Memorial Day in heavy snow years. When the road is closed but the US-6 approach is passable, the extended hike can be done in shoulder season by experienced hikers willing to add the mileage.

Rules and Regulations

Stay on the designated trail. The vegetation and soil around the grotto base are fragile; don’t cut through the shrub cover to reach the falls pool. No swimming in the pool due to cold water and slippery rocks. Pack out all trash. Dogs on leash. Leave No Trace principles apply. Free to visit, no permit required.

Nearby Adventures

Mount Nebo is the obvious big companion to this easy falls stop. At 11,928 feet, Nebo is the highest peak in the Wasatch Range, accessible via the Mount Nebo Trail from the Nebo Loop. The Grotto Falls stop can serve as a warm-up or rest day companion to a Mount Nebo summit attempt.

The Nebo Loop Scenic Byway is worth driving end-to-end when the road is fully open. The loop connects Payson on the north to Nephi on the south through the Mount Nebo Wilderness, and the full drive takes 2-3 hours at a sightseeing pace with stops. Grotto Falls is one of the anchored stops along the loop.

Bridal Veil Falls in Provo Canyon is the other Wasatch Front waterfall option, accessible about 30 minutes north. A natural same-day companion to Grotto Falls for anyone doing a southern Wasatch Front waterfall day.

Chase the Quiet

Mount Nebo is visible from the Nebo Loop in a way that makes the road itself feel like it’s in the mountain’s presence rather than just driving past it. Grotto Falls is tucked into the base of the range in the way that small things get tucked into big landscapes: easy to overlook from the road, worth stopping for. The grotto is cool when the rest of the canyon is warm. The sound of the water changes when you step inside it. That’s enough reason to drive Nebo Loop Road.
