Introduction:

Mesa Arch is one of the most iconic landmarks in Canyonlands National Park, offering breathtaking views of the vast desert landscape. Located in the Island in the Sky district near Moab, Utah, this short hike leads to an arch perched on the edge of a cliff, framing the dramatic scenery of canyons, cliffs, and distant mountains. Whether you’re a photographer seeking the perfect sunrise shot or a casual hiker looking for an easy yet rewarding trail, Mesa Arch is a must-visit destination.

How to Get There:

Canyonlands National Park is approximately 30 miles from Moab, Utah. To reach Mesa Arch, head north on US-191 for about 10 miles, then take UT-313 west towards Canyonlands National Park. There is a $30 per vehicle fee or the America the Beautiful Pass gets you in for free. After entering the park, continue on the main road for about 6 miles until you see the well-marked turnoff for Mesa Arch. The trailhead is located just off this road.

Parking Information:

There is a designated parking lot at the Mesa Arch trailhead. The parking area is relatively small, so it’s advisable to arrive early, especially if you plan to catch the sunrise, which is a popular time for visitors. During peak seasons, such as spring and fall, the lot can fill up quickly. If the parking lot is full, be prepared to wait or explore other nearby attractions while a spot opens up.

Description of the Landscape:

The hike to Mesa Arch offers a quintessential Canyonlands experience, with expansive views of the surrounding desert and towering rock formations. As you approach the arch, you’ll be greeted by the sight of the La Sal Mountains in the distance, framed perfectly by the arch. The view through Mesa Arch drops dramatically into Buck Canyon, creating a stunning backdrop that has made this spot one of the most photographed in the park. The landscape is particularly breathtaking at sunrise when the sun casts a warm glow on the underside of the arch.

Trail Difficulty and Length:

The Mesa Arch trail is an easy hike, making it accessible to visitors of all ages and fitness levels. The trail is a loop of approximately 0.5 miles, with a gentle elevation gain of about 100 feet. The path is well-marked and maintained, with a few rocky sections, but nothing too challenging. This short hike takes about 30 minutes to complete, including time to enjoy the views and take photos at the arch.

Is Mesa Arch Dog-Friendly?

Unfortunately, like most trails in Canyonlands National Park, Mesa Arch is not dog-friendly. Pets are not allowed on hiking trails, in the backcountry, or on unpaved roads within the park. Pets are permitted in parking areas, campgrounds, and along paved roads, but they must be on a leash no longer than six feet. If you’re traveling with a pet, consider other activities outside the park.

Local Regulations:

When hiking to Mesa Arch, it’s important to follow the park’s guidelines to protect the fragile desert environment. Always stay on designated trails to avoid damaging the biological soil crust, a critical component of the desert ecosystem. Visitors should pack out all trash and refrain from disturbing wildlife. Additionally, climbing on Mesa Arch itself is discouraged to preserve its natural state and prevent damage.
