Lady Finger Trail in Antelope Island State Park

Lady Finger Trail is the shortest hike on Antelope Island: 0.5 miles roundtrip with 15 feet of elevation gain to a prominent rock formation on the island’s north end near Bridger Bay Beach. The rock formation resembles a finger pointing upward, which is how the trail got its name and why it’s worth seeking out as a specific destination rather than a generic lake view walk. The island’s north end near Bridger Bay is a different character from the southern Buffalo Point and Frary Peak terrain: lower, with more direct lake access and the causeway visible to the south.

On Antelope Island, Lady Finger is the true easy option, shorter and flatter than Buffalo Point. It works for the youngest visitors, anyone with mobility considerations, or as a leg-stretch stop that doesn’t cost hiking energy before a harder trail. The Great Salt Lake view from the Lady Finger formation area is genuine, and the bison grazing near the north end of the island makes this part of the island’s terrain productive for wildlife viewing.

How to Get There

From Salt Lake City or Ogden, take I-15 to Syracuse and exit onto Antelope Drive (UT-127) heading west. Cross the Great Salt Lake causeway to Antelope Island. Follow the park road to the Lady Finger Point parking area just past the Bridger Bay Beach area. Lady Finger Point is on the north end of the island, near the causeway approach.

From Salt Lake City, plan about 35-40 minutes to the causeway, then 10-15 minutes on the island to the Lady Finger area. From Ogden, about 25-30 minutes to the causeway. $15 per vehicle entry fee at the causeway entrance.

Parking Information

Small parking lot at the Lady Finger Point trailhead. It fills on spring and fall peak weekends. Bridger Bay Beach parking is nearby if the Lady Finger lot is full. Restrooms at the Bridger Bay area a short distance from the trailhead.

Cell Service and Navigation

Cell coverage is solid on the island’s north end given the proximity to the Wasatch Front urban corridor. Download AllTrails offline as standard practice. The trail is short and straightforward; navigation is not a challenge.

What to Expect at Lady Finger Trail

The trail from the parking area leads to the Lady Finger formation: a prominent rock pinnacle on a point that juts into the Great Salt Lake. The walk is flat and brief, accessible on a well-maintained path. From the formation area, the view encompasses the Great Salt Lake, the causeway visible to the south, and the Wasatch Range across the water to the east.

The Bridger Bay area near the Lady Finger trailhead is one of the island’s primary bison grazing zones. Bison frequency in this northern section of the island is high enough that encounters on the approach road and near the parking area are common. The same distance and behavior rules apply here as anywhere on the island: maintain 25 yards minimum from bison, do not approach, do not allow dogs to interact. Bison are most active in the early morning and evening hours.

For photography: the Lady Finger formation itself is the distinctive subject. Wide-angle for the formation in the lake context, mid-range for the formation detail. Morning light from the east illuminates the formation and the Wasatch Range across the water behind it. The flat lake surface on calm mornings produces reflections visible from the point. Telephoto for bison in the grasslands around the north end of the island.

Trail Difficulty and Length

Lady Finger Trail is 0.5 miles with about 15 feet of elevation gain. Easy is accurate without qualification. This is the most accessible trail on Antelope Island. Budget 15-30 minutes for the full out-and-back.

Dog Friendly?

Yes. Dogs are permitted on leash throughout the Lady Finger Trail and the Bridger Bay area. The primary dog safety consideration is bison: keep dogs under tight leash control in the grasslands where bison graze and do not allow dogs to bark at or approach bison. Bring water for dogs; the exposed terrain and lake environment are warm in summer.

What to Bring

Water even for a 15-minute walk. Sun protection for the exposed lakeside terrain. Binoculars for bison and shorebird watching. Camera with a telephoto for the wildlife and wide-angle for the lake panorama.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows. The Bridger Bay area in spring brings nesting shorebirds to the lake edge and newborn bison calves to the grasslands. Fall migration brings large concentrations of phalaropes, avocets, and other shorebirds to the Great Salt Lake shallows that are visible from the Lady Finger area. Summer morning visits avoid the midday heat. The lake color is most dramatic in late summer when brine shrimp concentrations peak.

Rules and Regulations

Antelope Island State Park rules apply. Stay on designated trails. Maintain 25-yard minimum distance from bison. Dogs on leash. Pack out all trash. Leave No Trace principles throughout. $15 per vehicle entry fee.

Nearby Adventures

Buffalo Point Trail is the step-up option from Lady Finger: 1 mile / 250 feet of gain to a Great Salt Lake viewpoint with a stronger visual payoff than the flat Lady Finger walk. Dog-permitted. For anyone with older kids or more fitness, Buffalo Point is the natural progression from Lady Finger on the same island visit.

Frary Peak Trail is the hard summit: 7 miles / 2,300 feet to the island’s highest point at 6,596 feet. No dogs. Antelope Island spans from Lady Finger’s 15 minutes to Frary Peak’s 4-6 hours from the same $15 entry fee, which is a remarkable range of commitment from a single access point.
