If you’re up for a real Utah adventure, the Wasatch Skyline Drive OHV Trail is a must-see. Winding through the stunning Wasatch Mountains, this trail is a favorite among off-roaders and 4×4 fans alike. It’s an ideal blend of rough-and-ready terrain, gorgeous views, and plenty of nature. Whether you’re new to off-roading or have some trail miles under your belt, Skyline Drive offers an escape into the heart of Utah’s mountains that’ll leave you recharged and amazed.

Getting There Is Part of the Fun

Finding your way to the trailhead is easy and adds to the fun. Start by heading north from Salt Lake City on I-15, then take the Farmington exit. From there, just follow the signs for Skyline Drive, and before you know it, you’ll be climbing up into the mountains. Heads up: the road gets a bit rough near the top, so a high-clearance vehicle is a good idea, especially if it’s been raining. And don’t forget to fill up your tank before leaving Farmington!

The Landscape: A Bit of Everything

Skyline Drive is packed with scenery that keeps changing as you go. You’ll start with big views over the Salt Lake Valley, then climb higher into pine and aspen forests that seem like a whole new world. In late spring and early summer, wildflowers splash the mountains with color. And if you’re lucky, you might catch sight of some local wildlife.

What to Expect: Trail Difficulty and Length

The trail runs about 24 miles from Farmington to Bountiful and is pretty friendly as far as off-roading goes, though you might hit a few rocky patches and steep climbs. If you’re not up for the whole route, just covering the first 10-15 miles is enough to get a taste of the adventure and soak in the views.

Key Guidelines and Things to Keep in Mind

Before heading out, it’s a good idea to know a few ground rules. The Wasatch Mountain area is protected, so stick to marked OHV paths to help keep the area beautiful. Off-trail driving is a no-go, and please pack out anything you bring with you. From winter through early spring, parts of the trail may close due to snow, so check conditions before you go. Permits aren’t generally required, but if you’re planning a large group or special event, check with the Forest Service to see if you need approval.

Nearby Trails to Explore

If you’re craving more adventure, the Wasatch area has some fantastic trails nearby. The Farmington Canyon Trail offers a shorter, scenic route and is a great option if you’re looking to take it easy. For a tougher climb and impressive summit views, give the Francis Peak Trail a try. Another solid choice is the Bountiful Peak Trail, where you’ll find fewer people and some great rugged terrain.

Things to Do Nearby

Once you’re back in Farmington, there’s still plenty to explore. If you’re with family, Lagoon Amusement Park is a fun spot with rides and games for everyone. Station Park has lots of dining and shopping options if you want to grab a meal or just unwind. And if you’re up for more nature, head to Antelope Island State Park, it’s a unique spot on the Great Salt Lake where you can catch sight of bison, pronghorn antelope, and more.

Best Times to Go

The prime time for Skyline Drive is late spring to early fall, from about May to October. By then, most of the snow has melted, making the trail easier to access. Summer brings warmer weather, while early fall covers the mountainsides in gorgeous reds, oranges, and yellows. Winter off-roading is tricky here due to snow and ice, so it’s best to wait for the warmer months.
