If you want a fun, adventurous hike just outside of Las Vegas, Calico Tanks Trail is the perfect choice. This moderate trek takes you through vibrant red sandstone canyons, rocky scrambles, and hidden water pockets, leading to an amazing overlook of the Las Vegas skyline. It’s one of the most popular hikes in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, offering a mix of challenge, beauty, and a little bit of mystery.

How to Get There:

Red Rock Canyon is located just 17 miles west of Las Vegas. Take West Charleston Boulevard (NV-159) from the Strip and follow the signs to the Red Rock Canyon Scenic Drive.

There is an entrance fee of $15 per vehicle, or you can use an America the Beautiful Pass for access. Red Rock Canyon operates on a timed entry reservation system, so it’s best to book your entry pass in advance, especially on weekends.

Parking Information:

The Calico Tanks Trailhead is at the Sandstone Quarry parking area, located about 3 miles into the scenic loop. This is a small lot that fills up quickly, so arrive early to grab a spot. If the lot is full, you may have to wait for a space to open up or park at a nearby trailhead and walk back.

The Landscape:

The scenery on Calico Tanks Trail is pure desert magic. The hike starts in an open wash surrounded by towering red rock formations, then winds through narrow canyons, natural stone staircases, and layered sandstone walls. The trail is a mix of sand, slickrock, and some light scrambling, making it feel like a natural playground for hikers.

One of the most exciting parts of the trail is the hidden water basin, or “tank,” that sometimes holds water after rainfall. Even if it’s dry, the smooth rock surrounding the tank is a stunning spot to rest and soak in the views.

Trail Difficulty & Length:

Calico Tanks Trail is a moderate hike, covering 2.5 miles round trip. While it’s not too long, it does involve some rock scrambling and uneven terrain, so be ready for a little climbing and balancing over boulders.

The elevation gain is about 400 feet, and some sections require using your hands to navigate the rocks. If you’re comfortable with a bit of scrambling and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, you’ll love the adventure.

The trail is well-marked but rugged, so wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring plenty of water.

Dog-Friendly?

Yes, dogs are allowed on the Calico Tanks but they must be kept on a leash. The desert terrain can be tough on paws, especially in hot weather. If you bring your dog, go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, and bring plenty of water for both of you.

The Red Rock Visitor Center is a great place to learn about the area’s history, wildlife, and geology. There are also picnic areas, rock climbing routes, and guided tours available, making it a great day trip from Las Vegas.

The best time to hike Calico Tanks Trail is from October to April, when the weather is cool and comfortable. Temperatures can range from 50°F to 75°F, making for ideal hiking conditions.

Summers in Red Rock Canyon can be brutally hot, often exceeding 100°F, and there is no shade on the trail. If you hike in warmer months, go early in the morning or just before sunset, and bring plenty of water.
